Choosing a Beginner Drone

As a beginner drone pilot, I was looking for a few key features when choosing my first drone. I wanted to help make learning to fly as easy and safe as possible, without destroying my investment straight out of the box. In this post, I’ll share my experience of choosing a drone and discuss tips for fellow drone enthusiasts in their search.

Define Your Purpose:

It’s essential to determine your purpose for owning a drone. Are you interested in aerial photography, videography, or simply exploring your surroundings? Understanding your goals will help narrow down the options and find a drone with features that meet your requirements. For example, if you’re just learning to fly, maybe you’ll want something with one button take off and landing, altitude hold, easily available spare parts, and a decent battery life to allow for plenty of practice.

Set a Budget:

Drones come in a wide range of prices, from affordable entry level models to high end professional machines. Consider your budget and features you prioritize in order to make an informed decision. Remember, investing in a quality drone will help ensure a better flying experience and reduce the risk of crashes or malfunctions.

Research, and Research More:

The internet is your best friend when it comes to researching drones. Read reviews, watch YouTube videos, join drone forums, and seek advice from experienced pilots. By immersing yourself in drone related content, you’ll gain insights into different brands, models, and their respective capabilities.

Choose a Reliable Brand:

Opting for a reputable brand helps to insure quality and reliability. Well known brands often have a wide range of accessories and spare parts available, making repairs or upgrades easier in the future. They also likely have a network of customer support if needed.

Consider Ease of Use:

As a beginner, simplicity is key. Look for drones that are user friendly, offer intuitive controls, and have built in safety features such as obstacle avoidance and return to home functions. Starting with a beginner friendly drone will help you master the basics before moving on to more advanced models.

Our Choice for a Beginner Drone:

This post contains affiliate links, which I may receive a small commission at no cost to you, if you make a purchase through a link.

We chose the Ruko F11GiM2 with camera, (pictured above) because of its affordability, GPS, reasonable battery life, and simple controls. It came as a kit with the drone, handheld controller, 2 extra batteries, 3 USB charging cables, spare propeller blades, and an Allen-wrench and screw. It also comes with instruction and quick start guides, carrying case and helipad. You can download the free Ruko app to connect your smart phone to the drone’s camera. It’s available on Amazon, and I’ve included the link.

The Ruko comes with a compact and portable design, and carrying case, making it easy to bring wherever your adventures take you.

There was one feature I wanted that was not included in this drone: Obstacle Avoidance. I found that the price increases, sometimes dramatically, when that’s added.

One of my first photos! The Lesner Bridge, Virginia Beach, Virginia

Overall, the Ruko is a perfect drone companion to begin my aerial journey with. More adventures and photos to come!

Passing the Test: FAA Part 107

A few months ago I saw an ad in my email about becoming a drone pilot. I was intrigued, and thought the idea of doing something different would be fun and adventurous and amazing, so I decided to give it a try. I started this blog to document my adventures, so I needed to pass the FAA Part 107 Exam. If you’re planning to fly for any sort of business or industry, or even showcase your photography and videos on a YouTube channel, a FAA Part 107 Certification is required. If you’re going to be compensated in any way for flying, you’ll need this certification. Given that I had no flight experience, it was daunting, at first, but with preparation and solid study habits, I passed the test with no problem. In this post, I’ll talk about some tips and strategies to help you succeed too.

This post contains affiliate links, which I may receive a small commission at no cost to you, if you make a purchase through a link.

The FAA provides information on becomming a drone pilot, which I’ve linked here. https://www.faa.gov/uas/commercial_operators/become_a_drone_pilot.

Of course, there’s a lot of information on the FAA site, so take your time going through it.

Enrolling in an online course can provide structure and guidance throughout your study. Here’s a link to the course I took. https://www.dronepilotgroundschool.com/

Speaking of practice exams, make it a habit to answer sample questions. Before taking the exam, I completed 60 questions each day, which helped me identify areas that I needed additional study. Answering multiple-choice questions regularly will build your confidence and improve your test-taking skills.

Utilize additional materials apart from the study guide provided by the FAA, and materials from your online course. YouTube tutorials were very helpful in understanding our airspace system, as well as air traffic patterns. I also used the FAA Part 107 Test Supplement, linked here. This is the book (or a similar edition) of it, that will be given to you to refer to when answering questions.

As the exam date approaches, allocate time to review all the topics. Focus on areas where you struggled during the practice exams and reinforce your understanding. Take your time and make sure you understand the concepts. You’ll need a minimum of 70% correct answers to pass the test, but you’ll be much better off if you’re making in the high 80’s to 90% on the practice exams.

You’ll need to register for the test and make an appointment. You can choose a testing center near you when you register. On the day of the exam make sure to get a good night’s sleep, eat breakfast and arrive early at the test center. Stay calm. You’re allowed to take a magnifying glass with you in order to see the small details in the test supplement, but no other personal items are allowed in the testing area. I was able to leave my keys and phone with the test proctor and retrieve them afterward. Read each question carefully and pay attention to details. Trust in your preparation and believe in your ability to succeed.

Passing the Part 107 exam requires careful preparation, commitment and dedication. Stay focused, and you’ll reach your goal and pass the test!

A Word About Personal Perspective

Introduction:

In our daily lives, we often find ourselves trapped in routines, limited by our own perspectives, and hesitant to explore new possibilities. One of the most transformative actions we can take is to change our perspective. By shifting the lens through which we view the world and our experiences we open ourselves up to fresh insights, opportunities, and personal growth. In this post we will delve into the value of changing your perspective and how it can bring about profound positive changes in life.

Broadening Horizons:

Changing your perspective allows you to escape the confines of your own thoughts. By embracing alternative viewpoints, you gain a broader understanding of the world and its intracies. This expanded perspective fosters empathy, cultural sensitivity, and a greater appreciation for diversity. It enables you to find common ground and connect with people from different backgrounds, fostering meaningful relationships and nurturing a more inclusive society.

Problem Solving and Innovation:

When faced with challenges or stagnation, changing your perspective can be a powerful catalyst for problem-solving and innovation. By stepping outside of your usual thinking patterns, you can visualize problems from different angles, uncovering fresh solutions and novel approaches. This ability to think creatively and adaptively is crucial in both personal and professional spheres, allowing you to overcome obstacles and seize opportunities that were previously hidden.

Personal Growth and Development:

Embracing new perspectives nurtures personal growth and development. It encourages self-reflection, helping you gain insights into your own biases, limitations, and preconceived notions. By challenging your own beliefs, you open the door to personal transformation, gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and the world around you. This process of continuous growth fuels self-improvement, boosts confidence, and expands your sense of possibility.

Enhanced Communication and Relationships:

Changing your perspective strengthens your communication skills and enhances your relationships. You become a better listener, communicator and collaborator by actively seeking to understand differing viewpoints. Empathetic listening fosters stronger connections, builds trust and encourages open dialogue. It allows you to navigate conflicts with grace and understanding, fostering healthier relationships and nurturing a supportive network.

Resilience and Adaptability:

In a rapidly changing world, the ability to adapt and remain resilient is crucial. Changing your perspective equips you with the flexibility and adaptability needed to thrive in ever-evolving circumstances. It helps you break free from rigid thinking patterns and embrace change as an opportunity for growth rather than a source of fear. By adopting a more open mindset, you become better equipped to navigate uncertainty, embrace new challenges, and adapt to shifting circumstances.

Conclusion:

Changing your perspective is a transformative and empowering choice. It allows you to break free from the limitations of routine thinking, opening the door to personal growth, innovation, and enhanced relationships. By actively seeking out alternative viewpoints and challenging your own beliefs, you gain a more profound understanding of yourself and the world. Embrace the power of perspective, and embark on a journey of growth, exploration, and positive, lasting change.
